DW: Nine Hopes For Series Nine

With series nine of Doctor Who slowly approaching, I decided to make a list of hopes I have for series nine. So, here we go! Spoilers, follow!

  1. More UNIT
UNIT has been a big part of Doctor Who for majority of it's fifty year run: the Third Doctor's era in particular, which was set almost entirely on Earth, with the Doctor working with UNIT and almost all the Doctors have encountered UNIT on screen. In the past ten years, Doctors Nine, Ten, Eleven and Twelve have all encountered UNIT, but we really haven't had very many recurring characters from UNIT. Most recently, we've had Kate Stewart, daughter of the Brig, and Osgood, who was killed off in the Series Eight finale. I think a couple of episodes should be set on earth, with the Doctor having to work with UNIT to save the day, and then introduce some new recurring characters to have Kate work with that'll show up in episodes she's in (and hopefully won't be killed off).

  1. Scarier Episodes

I've got a secret: there's only three episodes of Doctor Who that really freaked me out: the two parter The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, and the infamous Blink. While last season had some creepy episodes (the monologue at the beginning of  Listen was definitely creepy), with a few jumps in there (here's looking at you, graveyard scene from Death in Heaven). But I want creepy episodes. I want proper, scary, hide-behind-your-couch scary. There are some scenes in episodes you can't help but jump at: the monster under the bed (Girl in the Fireplace, it's been eight years and every time I watch it, I still jump) and the previously mentioned Death in Heaven. Doctor Who has a reputation of being a terrifying show, and the main complaint of it is that it's 'too scary for kids' (as a kid who grew up watching Supernatural-even when she wasn't suppose to-I can say that it never bothered me, minus the Cybermen), which was brought up once more last season, due to some scenes in Dark Water. Anyway, I want monsters: scary monsters, a dark setting (old creepy mansion? Deserted warehouse? Abandoned space ship?), and a small band of characters. Think....Cold War meets Tooth and Claw meets Mummy on the Orient Express, I suppose. I want jumps, squeals and hiding-behind-a-pillow. I mean, isn't it fun being scared-especially when you're watching something? I think that with it being close to Halloween (it's scheduled to premiere in 'Autumn', whatever that means), it would work with a really scary episode.

  1. More of Missy/Master Vs. The Doctor
The whole Missy revelation was a bit shocking (I was speechless for about ten minutes after the revelation), and her.....I guess, chemistry? With the Doctor was great fun-it definitely made for a great villain/hero dynamic. While I think I prefer some of the Classic Masters, with their gentleman-y personalities, I think it has more to do with era. With the era the classics were in, Moriarty type villains were popular, but now more Joker type villains are more popular, so it's only natural that the Master/Missy would be more.....bananas (hey, they said it her/himself!). Anyway, Missy definitely has a lot to explain: how'd she get away from Rassilon and his merry men? And where exactly is Gallifrey? I think they even announced Missy would be back, so hopefully that leads to more answers than questions.......

    1. More Doctor
One of the main complaints of series eight was how Doctor Who was turning into Clara Who, a gag the show even nodded toward in the season finale, Death in Heaven, with Jenna Coleman's name going before Peter Capaldi, and her face showing up instead of his (also probably due to Clara's attempt to fool the Cybermen into thinking she was the Doctor). While many fans supported Clara's more prominent role, the writers have been shown to listen to the fans in the past, so I think that's probably going to be something they're going to listen to. I also think her more prominent role was due to the complaints about Clara in Series Seven. I guess more episodes like Mummy on the Orient Express, with a few Flatlines thrown in for good measure would make for a good formula.
    1. TARDIS Trio
I think adding a companion this season would help mix things up a little. I think it would add a new dynamic to the Doctor/Clara friendship, and it would certainly be interesting to see what kind of chemistry the Doctor would have with a companion that wasn't Clara-and vice versa, what kind of friendship (or relationship, if they went that route again) Clara would have with the companion. While this was what many expected from Series Eight, with one Danny Pink, he never actually traveled in the TARDIS, not even for a single episode. Plus, I just really love TARDIS trios, okay?

    1. Lighthearted Episodes
I love the lighthearted episodes of Series Eight, Robot of Sherwood in particular. While some thought it was a bit jarring to have such a lighthearted episode thrown into another wise grittier start to a season, I think it worked. It was funny, and an absolute riot with Robin and the Doctor's bickering. While you would think that the Twelfth Doctor wouldn't fit into place in such lighthearted episodes, being a much snarkier Doctor, after all, but he's still the Doctor-the madman hero.

    1. Mythological Characters
When I say mythological, I don't mean the Greek Gods, or the Roman Gods for that matter. I mean more episodes with characters that are technically myths, like Santa Claus and Robin Hood. Why? Because I love the bickering. Yes, the bickering between Santa Claus and the Doctor, and Robin Hood and the Doctor. Now, I don't really know who else they could use, but I think it'd be very interesting indeed.

    1. A Good Exit
Chances are, this will be Clara's last season. This will be her second full season, and before those, she starred in twelve full episodes in Eleven's era (alright, technically in two of them she wasn't really playing Clara, but still). While Clara's farewell was hinted at nearly all season, especially after the falling out she and the Doctor had in Kill the Moon, Clara almost left in Mummy on the Orient Express, left in Death in Heaven, only to return in Last Christmas, where the Doctor offered to take her with him once more, and off they went. Given all the times Clara's almost left the Doctor before hand, (and the fact that it was never announced if she was staying all season long) I'd hate to see what would bring the Doctor and Clara apart.........

  1. Gallifrey

Last season ended with the Doctor with all hopes gone of ever finding Gallifrey (so devastated that he actually hit/beat up the TARDIS), after Missy 'gave' him coordinates to where Gallifrey was now. But did she really? It would certainly be interesting to see how Gallifrey fared after being frozen, no doubt with a few Daleks still on the planet, plus having to deal with Rassilon. It would be nice to see a non-war torn Gallifrey for once, and I think seeing characters such as Romana and the Rani would be nice, maybe even create some new Time Lords and Ladies......
