Agent Carter Review

The highly anticipated ABC mini-series Agent Carter, spawned from the Marvel one-shot of the same name, premiered last Tuesday to our screens, re-introducing us with fan-favorite Hayley Atwell, as well as introducing us to brand new characters.
The show follows Peggy Carter in a world where she doesn't seem to be needed, and trying to fight the good fight, even when the guys in the SSR aren't willing to let Peggy out on the field...or do anything that isn't sit at a desk. However, when Howard Stark requests Peggy's help on a top-secret case, her life gets a lot more interesting...and dangerous.
Agent Carter feels like Marvel's version of a noir mystery....and it is. The 1940 era fits perfectly for not only the continuity of the show, but also the tone of the show. Not to mention the use of songs that were either from the '40s, or made to sound like it work excellently along with it.
While the show focuses on Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), it also re-introduces Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), who starred alongside Atwell in Captain America: The First Avenger, as well introducing brand new characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in the forms of Peggy's fellow agents in the SSR, as well as Edwin Jarvis (James D'Arcy), Stark's butler whom is requested to help Peggy in her mission. Jarvis and Peggy's friendship works wonderfully in the story, though at the rate I wouldn't call it much of a friendship, but does have the potential to eventually reach that. Peggy's also got a friend in a young waitress Angie, who doesn't know anything of Peggy's spying, but the two's friendship is also wonderful. The show makes multiple references to Steve Rodgers (Chris Evans), which could do well for the show if they dropped the constant references. One every once and a while will do. Anyway, the mystery itself already has me eager to find out what happens next, which is probably a good thing. In short, the show is funny, fun, heart-wrenching at times, exciting and suspenseful. And it's certainly nice to have a comic-book show featuring a female lead.
