Doctor Who: Mummy on the Orient Express

Back with another review! At this rate, my review for Into the Forest of the Night will probably be up
on Tuesday. I probably won't be able to catch up on AOS reviews in time, but I will review this Tuesday's episode. Onto the review!

Synopsis:
The Orient Express-in space. Passengers are being killed by a mysterious mummy, whom once you've seen you've got only 66 seconds to live. When the bodies keep dropping, it's up to the Doctor to solve the mystery-before it's too late.

Review:
This episode did the murder mystery vibe quite wonderfully. Doctor Who usually nails it when it heads onto that genre (The Unicorn and the Wasp, anybody?). The episode is filled with a wonderful set that truly looks like a train, with the exception that it's in outer space. While the idea of it is a bit kooky, it seems to work for the episode. The Mummy is a proper mummy, too. It's quite creepy to look at, really. With everyone decked out like Daisy and Gatsby in the episode, it definitely has that 'we're in the 20's vibe' to it. I personally love the episodes when they head to the 20's or 30's. It really works wonders. The mystery was interesting, and the episode had quite a few funny moments (particularly the Doctor trying to convince himself there is absolutely nothing strange going on in the train, and of course, 'Are you my mummy?'). It finally resolved Clara and the Doctor's fight, leaving the two onto the next. I do believe, however, the Doctor is beginning to realize that he might just be losing Clara; I'm beginning to wonder if she's going to leave (like the rumors suggest) like Jo Grant or the Ponds, by leaving the Doctor for a normal life, or 'Growing up' as Eleven put it in The Power of Three. However, that theory might not prove true after the season finale. In all, Mummy on The Orient Express is a brilliant episode, with like able side characters, a creepy looking monster, and a good mystery to it.

4/5

  1. This episode reminded me of The Unicorn and the Wasp as well. It also reminded me of Voyage of the Damned, although that is only because of the train in space, rather than a ship. This is my favorite episode of the season by any means, but it was very good, and I liked the focus on The Doctor in it.

    1. Yeah, I guess it does remind me of VOFD a bit too-just with a tad bit of a happier ending. I think the episode is on my list of favorites of this series (I love the historical episodes, ironic since I don't care too much for history), and it is a really good episode. The Doctor did have a big focus, and I think it worked well.
