After last week's creep-feast, we got a more light-hearted episode in tone (not quite Robot of Sherwood, though. It was far from light-hearted in terms of comparing to ROS), and featured our beloved time-travelling duo trying to pull of the bank heist of a life time.
Synopsis:
The Doctor and Clara wake up in a room with no recollection of how they got there, along with two other people who also don't remember anything. They soon discover that a stranger named 'The Architect' has recruited them to rob the most secure bank in the universe....but can they get past the Teller?
Review:
The episode was pretty funny, especially the first 5 minutes, and really featured the whole 'heist' film thing, the transitions were really heist-y. The episode introduced us to two new characters, who were both like able, and hit it off well with our two time travellers. It also featured one of the most freakiest/disgusting effects of a monster's power since the Zygon's transition in Day of the Doctor. We got a lot of nice moments between the Doctor and Clara once again, and I must say I'm really enjoying their duo, they really have the possibility of becoming one of my favorite Team TARDISes. Anyway, back to the plot. It had some nice twists to it, though may be a little easy to try to figure out. The episode, minor spoilers, doesn't seem to further the 'Paradise' plot arch, though, which is odd because that's two episodes in a row without a mention of it. The suspense is killing me! End of minor spoilers. The episode had a nice-but brief-callback to a villain from the Sarah Jane Adventures and one from-I think-Torchwood (I caught the SJA reference, but I haven't seen Torchwood, so, I could be wrong).
The episode had a bunch of brilliant lines, and funny scenes, as well as make the mouth drop sort of scenes. Also, some of the scenes featured a lot of tension in them. In all, the episode was a nice episode, and I think pulled off the 'heist' genre with a nice Who twist.
Overview:
4/5
Next Time: Strange things are happening at Coal Hill-but first, Clara's got to survive having the Doctor as 'The Caretaker' of Coal Hill....

Yet another top notch episode! I really enjoyed this one too. It was both funny and smart. *Spoilers* It was somewhat obvious that the Doctor was behind the whole operation, but I did not expect the other twists. The Teller is a very cool new monster as well. Great review Tegan!

I know right, not a second episode so far this season has disappointed me. It was funny and smart, but isn't almost every DW episode? Gotta love that 'bout Doctor Who. *Spoilers* Yeah, I didn't catch on until the Doctor went on to say 'he's manipulative and thinks he's clever' and I thought, okay, he's bound to be the Doctor. Cool, but creepy. Thanks! Can't wait to read yours!

Hi Tegan! I like your blog! I'll be following you right after I publish this. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I agree, the beginning was brilliant. I loved the "nothing ever happens when you answer the phone" bit. I liked the two additions a lot too, they fit in very well, and the Doctor/Clara dynamic, I agree, has gotten very nice. Better than I expected. This episode is now my favorite of this season!
Thanks for the follow and the comment, Sarah!
DeleteThank you. The beginning was hilarious, and funny. Psi and Sabria were nice additions, and it'd be fun to see them again if we could. The Doctor/Clara dynamic, well Twelve/Clara dynamic is awesome, in my opinion. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode!
