The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Review

Firstly, I would like to say one thing before beginning: I'm hardly a Lord of the Rings expert. I know I watched the first two films when I was...well, when I was really, really little. I re-watched the first movie with my Dad a year or so ago, though.
Screencap from trailer
Anyway, I'd heard about the Hobbit from around the 'net, and even watched the trailer for Desolation of Smaug. My Dad watched the first Hobbit film, which was An Expected Journey, but I didn't watch it, so while watching Desolation, I was a bit clueless at times (I hope I'll get to see the first one eventually though, that way things make a little more sense).
     Onto the review!
The Desolation of Smaug was a pretty good film, even if I was having trouble not falling asleep (we started the movie at nine, so it was almost midnight before it went off) and thus made things even harder to  understand, but my only complaint was how low to volume was. I mean, really. The fight scenes were alright with the volume but when it was just characters talking, it was almost impossible to hear, and we had the tv up loud.
The fight scenes were done well, though there weren't very many sword fights, some were through bow-and arrows, while other action scenes were just chases. The humor in the film was really good, and I thought Bilbo was far more likable than any of the other Hobbits I've seen (er, no offense, guys.). The plot didn't make as much sense to me as others, but that's just because I didn't see the first film, so there's that. The forest scene was good, but it had me squealing, because I'm afraid of spiders-I knew they were in the film, but I still wanted to see the movie, so it's my own fault-but the whole scene there, and the action in that scene was great. The movie really kicks off when they get to Smaug's lair though (was that what is was called?), and the scenes in it were both funny and thrilling at the same time-it had you on the edge of your seat, and also had you smiling occasionally from the humor.
The ending though....let me tell you one thing, my Dad was not happy about that ending. From a writing standpoint, I had to applaud the writers' at a perfect use of an ending. However, the movie-watching part of me was going 'No! You can't end it like that!' So, ahem, it was a good ending, if not absolutely...maddening.           Can't wait till the next movie comes out on DVD so we can watch what happens next though....

Stars:
Three out of Five (will probably go up if I see the first film though...and watch this one during the day...)

  1. To understand and enjoy the movie better, you definitely need to watch the first movie and the LOTR trilogy. It makes a huge difference. But I am glad that you enjoyed the movie anyway.

Thanks for the link to my review and for the comment (sorry I haven't replied to that one yet).
