Agents of SHIELD: Providence Review
This Post is Not Spoiler-Free. Do not Read Unless you have seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier, or Agents of SHIELD's episode, 'Turn, Turn, Turn'.
The uprising came and went for the agents of SHIELD, and in last night's episode, they were feeling the aftershocks, but how big were the shocks?
Previously on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD: Uprising
The team find themselves in the middle of a war that pits Hydra and SHIELD head to head, but the cost is SHIELD is now in ruins, and no one can trust anyone-for good reason. Meanwhile, Agent Grant Ward reveals his position as a double agent, to none other than the Clairvoyant, otherwise known as Agent John Garret.....
Now:
The team is feeling the aftermath of the revelation of Hydra being part of SHIELD, and now a civil war has been created within SHIELD. With SHIELD in ruins, the team is struggling to find their feet again, and are having trouble trusting one another. Meanwhile, Ward and Garret reek havoc, once again recruiting some old allies....
Review:
After last week's jaw-dropping episode, I expected this episode to be better than it was. It wasn't really that shocking. I kind of figured how the episode would end from the previews they released, but still, seriously? You're just going to give him the coordinates to a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. base that no one knows about...seriously though, you don't just go handing that info out, especially someone who's been missing for a while! Who knows what could've happened to him in that time, and who his loyalty lies to, I mean, really. I hate knowing something the characters don't. Really. I drives me nuts because they won't ever listen to me. For once, I know how the Doctor feels...
Ahem, anyway, the episode did have a couple of shocks, one of them would be name-drop of the Cellist, who-by the way-appears in next week's episode (okay, that episode will either be heart-warming, or heart-breaking. Knowing this show, probably the latter, but I'm really hoping the whole Cellist/Coulson thing will end well. Really. And why do I care so much about a relationship we haven't even seen yet??). Anyway, my mind has been turning about Garret's mention of the Cellist, and I wonder what importance that has. Most of the episode mainly showed us Ward's (*cough, traitor, *cough*) loyalty to the Clairvoyant, even though he appears very upset about how the Clairvoyant seems not to care about Skye's safety. I admit, the phone call scene had me smiling slightly, 'cos it was a sweet scene, but he's still a traitor (seriously though, there's been four different betrayals in SHIELD, of characters that we've grown to know and love, so far. I mean, really guys? Seriously? Who else? At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if the Cellist would be a Hydra agent. I really hope not, but still.). Okay, if you can't tell, I get a little cheesed off when characters that I've grown to like betrays the character on the shows, but, anyway, I'll actually get onto the review.
In the episode, we got some nice moments with Coulson, who is dealing with the 'death' of his former S.O. the betrayal of May, and the fall of SHIELD, and we also learn that Coulson has apparently been part of SHIELD essentially his own life, since after High school. We also got a nice moment of Ward telling Raina (The Girl in the Flower Dress, or Flowers) essentially the same thing Coulson just got done telling Skye, about how Garret picked him up out of his life, and began training him. So, that was a neat little parallel. We had some nice moments between Simmons (whom I've started to call Jemma more often than Simmons) and Tripp, with her defending Tripp in front of Coulson, and earning him a spot on the Bus for now (I hope Tripp becomes part of the team, there's a sort of void now where Ward used to be). We also had some moments of Fitz looking jealous at the fact that Jemma is defending Tripp, and Fitz doesn't seem to like Tripp all that much. One of the things that I thought was odd was how...Fitz-y Fitz was acting. I mean he did kill a guy last week, and in the final moments of last week's show he was pretty shaken up, but he seemed a lot like normal Fitz in this episode.
I was surprised how long it took them to get to the base, as well, 'cos from the preview, it seemed to me that the episode would revolve around it or in it, but it only appeared in the last few minutes of the episode.
So, majority of this review is me being cheesed off about the betrayal, but I promise, it's a good episode, I'm just really cheesed off about this whole betrayal thing. I don't know who to trust anymore. Really.
Overview:
3/5 (I really expected the episode to have more shocks, but compared to last week's, this episode just wasn't as good)
Next Week on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD
Next week looks good, though. Really good. I'm interested to see how the whole Cellist thing will play out, and the whole Ward being evil thing too...so, yeah.
What did you think of the episode? Are you surprised at last week's betrayal? Are you looking forward to next week's episode? Comment below!

Grant and Garret are HYDRA! NOOOOOOOO!!!!! It was such a great twist, but I totally did not see it coming!
ReplyDeleteI liked the episode a lot more than you did because I am liking how broken SHIELD and Coulson are after the events of the Winter Soldier. I also liked Skye's line, "What are we? Agents of Nothing?" That is what I was thinking and I like how Coulson and others are having to pick up the pieces after what happened.
Your reaction minds me a lot of what my mother thought about the episode (my entire family watches the series) because she could not get over Ward being a bad guy.
I seriously cannot wait for next week's episode because I love Amy Acker! And I can't wait to see what happens with the Cellist, but I also have the suspicion that she might be with HYRDA. I really hope she is not though.

I know. The Garret part was just like out of the blue, and I was like what, but when they revealed it about Ward, a couple seconds before hand I thought (very sarcastically) that he might shoot them, but when he did? Mouth dropped.
DeleteThe episode was good, in my opinion too, and it had a lot of funny moments (We have internet'-Skye. 'Yay! And, boy, have my expectations lowered...'-Coulson), and it had a lot of nice moments with the team, but when someone betrays someone on a show, I find it personal. Very personal. It just wasn't quite as shocking or awesome as last week's though. Next week's looks awesome though.
Well, I can't really blame her. Who would've thought that Ward would be a bad guy? I still can't get over it, well, mostly the cheesed off part. As you can tell. I'm glad you watch it with your family!
I know! I really can't wait for next week's episode, when it was announced she would be coming on the series I was really excited, and now I'm really worried about her and Coulson, and I can't figure out why I'm so worried about a relationship we haven't even seen yet, so....
Honestly, at this point I think the series isn't 'Who's Hydra' it's 'Who ISN'T Hydra'. At this point, I don't think I trust anybody. I hope she's not either, cos that'd break Coulson's heart.
