Ship Saturday: Fitzsimmons

Welcome to the first ever 'Ship Saturday'. Basically, every Saturday I will go over some of my favorite ships (aka: relationships) from TV shows, movies and books. Today I will be focusing on Jemma Simmons and Leo Fitz's relationship on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which is one of the most popular ships in the S.H.I.E.L.D. fandom (next to Skye and Ward), and is one of my favorite ships in television at the moment.
So, let's get started!
(Note: Spoilers Below the Cut from both Season One and Season Two)

The History:
While not much is known about Fitzsimmons' time at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Academy, the most we do know (from various deleted scenes from the episode Seeds) is that Fitzsimmons started as rivals: according to Fitz, Simmons was one of the smartest students there, and he often found himself not sure of what to say to her, which led Simmons to believe that he hated her. Eventually, they were paired in Chem-Lab and-according to Simmons-they just realized that combined, they were twice as smart. They were apparently rather popular at the Academy (or Sci-Ops), and Fitz described them once as having been together the whole time. Skye once described their relationship as 'psychically linked', due to their constant sentence-finishing and often being in-sync with each other.

Why it Works:
One of the biggest things to get me to ship something, is their chemistry. And Fitzsimmons has it. What with their constant sentence-finishing, being in-sync and being completely adorable science nerds, Fitzsimmons started off the series as best friends, completely inseparable. However, as the season went on, the two started to be on different pages, especially after Hydra revealed themselves in the episode Turn, Turn, Turn. While Fitz believed they had to stick with S.H.I.E.L.D. because in that time, you've got to stick to person you trust, Simmons wasn't entirely sure why she was staying at all.
Another small rift was caused by Fitz having realized that he was in love with Simmons, after her near-death experience in F.Z.Z.T, and couldn't bring himself to tell her. At the end of Ragtag, they were dropped into the bottom of the ocean in a Med Pod by Grant Ward (who's loyalty was with John Garret, a Hydra agent) and Fitz confessed his feelings for Simmons, who then sacrificed himself to save her, by giving her the one breath of oxygen that they had. However, Simmons pulled him up to the surface anyway, which led to Fitz  receiving brain damage.
In season two, their rift grew even worse when Simmons left to go undercover at Hydra, believing that she made Fitz even worse, lying to him about where she went. According to Coulson, 'her leaving just broke him'. Fitz even began to hallucinate  that Simmons was still there, however these stopped when she returned. Due to the amount of lying (and the feeling of betrayal), and Fitz believing that Simmons couldn't see that he was different, their rift grew worse. However, they're starting to heal, even starting to Fitzsimmons again (like in season one) in the last episode.

The Moment I Shipped It:
Love is a Promise
I think it was the moment as everyone else. The speech in F.Z.Z.T. How anyone could not end up shipping those two after 'I've been beside you the whole damn time'? I stopped for a while, as in most interviews I read, the actors were saying it was a 'brother/sister' relationship that they were playing at, but the writers went a different way, and viola, here I am. Fitzsimmons (nicknamed the Science Babies by the fandom) have led to many a heartbreak within the show, starting as early as F.Z.Z.T, and have proven that they're still capable of heartbreak in season two. However (despite differing opinions on the Inhumans), it appears the two have finally started to heal and with any luck they will be Fitzsimmons once more at the end of the season.

The Future:
What could the future lie in store for Fitz and Simmons? I think that a reconciliation is definitely in order, and maybe a talk where they hash out their feelings (How Simmons feels about Fitz being different, Fitz and his feelings for Simmons, ect.). While the future seemed awfully bleak for a very long time, it'll probably work out best in the end since Fitzsimmons are based on the writers' of the series' relationship (the two are happily married).

Edits are all done by me on my Tumblr Blog.

  1. Excellent post! And very well written. In season 1, I was all aboard the SS Fitzsimmons ship, but I am almost starting to like the idea of Simmons and Skye as a ship. There is something that I am liking a lot.

    1. I almost started shipping Fitz and Skye after 2x11, but then the hand-holding and the sandwich incident happened in the past couple episodes, and it was back to the S.S. Fitzsimmons ship. An interesting pair! Their friendship is adorable, and even Chloe Bennet and Elizabeth Henstridge ship it, haha.
      Thanks! :D
