Oculus Review

Ya know, I think this is the first time I've reviewed a horror film. I might be wrong though. Anyway, I think I can now officially say I've seen Karen Gillan in more things than any other actress (mainly Doctor Who and Selfie, though). Anyway, as I always say, onto the review!

Synopsis:
Kayley Russel is determined to prove her brother Timothy's innocence, after a tragedy occurred ten years previously, leaving the two orphans, after Tim was convicted of the murder of his father. When the siblings reunite, Kayley believes she's found a way to prove his innocence, and find out what really happened ten years ago....but can they survive a trip back to their childhood home?

Review:
I watched the trailer when it aired during an episode of Agents of SHIELD, and three things popped into mind: 1. it was strange hearing Karen Gillan without a Scottish accent, 2. a movie about a haunted mirror, yay, and 3. It looked absolutely Freaky. Yes, with a capital 'F'. Was it as scary as the trailer? Honestly? No, not really. I mean, the movie was freaky, alright, but the trailer looked (as my Mom put it) 'crazy'. Terrifying. But the film wasn't all that terrifying, thankfully since it had both mirrors and kids in it, which are big no-nos when it comes to horror films for me and my Mom. The film is 70% flashbacks, and while that would be fine, it doesn't give you much warning when it's flashbacks. And it doesn't help that some of them start from just showing someone from behind, and sometimes it's hard to tell if it's present day or the past. The flashbacks are used cleverly at the end of the film, however, and if you pay enough attention, you can figure out what happens next. Anyway, the movie definitely had some jumps in there-no doubt about it. And while I was a wee bit nervous watching (I've had a fear of things inside mirrors since Halloween Horror Nights did Bloody Mary that one year, and the TV showed that commercial NONSTOP), I enjoyed the film. It was freaky, and had a few 'what the hay' moments in there, and it didn't have any annoying characters or stupid stuff in it. However, the film has one downfall......the ending. While I won't spoil it for you, it does have one of those endings. In all, it was a great film, more suspenseful than anything else, but definitely a freaky movie.

  1. Horror movies are not typically my thing, but since Karen Gillan in it and you liked it, I am going to give it a watch. Excellent review!
