Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) Review

Like practically everyone else on earth, I'm very much well aware of TMNT. In fact, I used to own one of the original movies (though I barely remember it). So, admittedly, upon starting the newest film to feature Raph, Donnie, Leo and Mikey, I didn't have very high expectations. In fact, I don't think I had any. But, I wasn't disappointed. Onto the review!

Synopsis:
April O'Neil is in a desperate need for
a breakout story to capture headlines. And she finds it: in the form of four vigilantes, who are determined to take down evil in the cover of the night.

Review:
Alright, as I said above, I had seriously low hopes for the film. While it's been ages since I've seen the Turtles (not including the day when I sat through an episode or two of the recent cartoon series), I still had a fond spot for them (but who doesn't?). And, much to my shock and surprise, the film was actually....good. Really good. The film follows April O'Neil, a journalist looking for a proper story to do, and discovers four vigilantes trying to stop crime when the sun goes down. I won't say nothing else about the plot, because spoilers. The movie has plenty of action, though not too much to where it just gets dull and boring. While the film uses slow-motion a lot during the film, it doesn't edge too much on irritating. The heart of the film, which made it really good, was the humor. I'm not one to watch comedies very much, but I thought that TMNT was positively hilarious; the film was chock full of geeky references (thanks to the turtles of course) and each one got their own hilarious moment (or two) and more than a few scenes made me laugh out loud. The villain of the movie, Shredder, is done well, but is not the only villain in the film, and in the final part of the film everyone gets to play their own part; another aspect I'm glad is that they made April a capable character, who was able to help the turtles in a big way in the final part of the movie. In all honesty, the film really took me by surprise on just how good it was. Cowabunga!

Overview:
5/5

Note: The film did have at least one scene that lasted three to five minutes with flashing lights, just so everyone knows. Also, surprisingly, the trailer doesn't actually spoil much of anything, though it does seem to have a few deleted scenes in it.
