Top Ten Scariest Doctor Who Episodes

Happy Halloween! As one of my favorite holidays is today, I decided to comprise a list of some of the scariest episodes of Doctor Who-my favorite television show-because, let's face it, I don't think any other television alive has so many scary episodes.
Doctor Who is no stranger to horror; back when it was originally on, it's main thing was 'hiding behind the couch' because it was so scary. That hasn't changed much; there have certainly been episodes-and monsters-that could easily plague your nightmares in the new series. The show has seen memory-proof aliens, statues that move, gas- mask children, werewolves, vampires, minotaurs, mummies, you name it. So to celebrate, here's my top scariest episodes of Who.

10. Tooth and Claw:
While the episode never scared me, it's obviously got to be on the list; between the eerie mansion, to the full moon, chases, and body count, this episode was bound to be on my list. It's definitely an episode for Halloween, with a perfect monster for the setting, not to mention some hilarious quips from the Doctor and Rose, mainly Rose's ploy to get Queen Victoria to say 'I am not amused'. While I don't rank it high on the list-mainly because there's so many other scary episodes ahead of it-it's definitely perfect for today.

9/8. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances:
Kids. In. gas-masks. If that description ain't creepy enough already, try watching the episode in the dark (which I actually did at one point). Once more, the episode never really scared me, but that was before I learned just how terrifying children can be (honestly, after years of watching Supernatural,
you'd think I'd have learned my lesson). The episode has plenty of creepy moments (the TARDIS phone ringing), and chilling dialogue from the 'villians' "Are you my Mummy?" has plagued Whovians ever since. From a creepy, 'how are they going to get out of this one' cliffhanger to an awesome finale to the episode "Just this once, Rose, everybody lives!" the episode is definitely one of my list to watch today!

7. Blink:
This one. Right here. This is the one that left me with a life-long fear of statues (thank heavens they haven't done another episode with clowns...*shivers*). While I'm honestly not that big a fan of the episode like so many Whovians, I admit it's a darn good episode. From the Scooby-Doo references, to the creepy terrifying monsters, down to the showdown in the cellar, the episode is literally born for Halloween. Remember, don't blink!

6. Time of Angels:

This episode isn't a terrifying one, but it's got plenty of creepy moments-hello, Weeping Angel coming out of a television? Eeep!-and it's got plenty of suspense. It sets up well for the next one, which isn't as scary, but Time of Angels definitely fills the scare-factor with suspense.

5. Day of the Moon:
This episode is creepy. Honestly. One night, I decided to be real smart and watch the two-parter in the dark (bad mistake, when they hit the sewers and everything went dark, I thought something was wrong with my computer, then bam-o! Silents lunching out toward me in the dark) one night, alone. While the episode is not the most terrifying, it's definitely an eerie one, with on of the creepiest Doctor Who monsters ever-the Silents. The ceiling scene? Gets me every time.

4. Hide:
My favorite episode of series seven. It takes on the horror genre with a twist that was mainly divisive with fans, but I don't actually mind it. The episode has plenty 'there's something behind you' moments, plenty of ghost hunting moments 'cold spot, spooky', but also has plenty of laughs 'It's a..very loud noise. Very loud, very angry noise'. While the episode is not necessarily scary, it's perfect for Halloween, once more.

3. Flatline:
Probably the most recent scary episode we've had, but definitely creepy. With plenty of 'woah!' moments, the episode definitely went from 'cute idea' to horrifying, as Steven Moffat said it would. The monsters were just creepy enough to set the story in tone, and the tunnel scene was exciting and creepy. The episode is definitely another one just scary enough to make it onto this list.

2/1. The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit:
The number one on this list. This episode, for me, is easily the most terrifying episode of Doctor Who to date. I watched this one for like, the first full time last year, and learned what the old saying for Doctor Who meant; I needed a couch to hide behind! I've limited this episode to once a year-Halloween time-but I managed to watch it earlier this year in September or August. While it's still creepy,,watching it this time of year makes it all the more creepier. With a terrifying villain, plenty of jumps and scares, suspense, mystery, and a body count, this episode is terrifying.

So that's it for my list for Halloween! I plan on actually watching some of these today, hopefully I'll get too. Have a Happy Halloween!

  1. Excellent idea for a list! The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances and Blink are the top two for me! However, it has been a while since I have seen The Impossible Planet/Satan Pit, so I can't say much about that. Glad to see that you included "Flatline." Awesome choices Tegan!

    1. Thanks! Empty Child/Doctor Dances and Blink are definitely creepy episodes. Flatline was kind of an obvious choice, the monsters, The Boneless, were just...disturbing? Creepy? So, I knew it was going on the list. Thanks! Happpy Halloween!

  2. Nice list Tegan! Mine is very similar I think, except I would add Silence in the Library. And I'd put Blink first, then Hide, (my favorite of s7 too) Day of the Moon, Library, Time of the Angels, The Empty Child... and after that I'm not sure. All you choices were nice and scary!

    1. Thanks! I thought about adding Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but I ended up going against it because I was trying to keep it at a Top Ten, and there were so many other creepy episodes. Now that's an easily scary list right there, Blink left me with a fear of statues for the rest of my life! Thanks!
